Is your little guy or gal looking for a way to spend more time outside?  Hiking is a great way to see nature and learn about the world around us.  Kids will love the book “Ranger Rick Kids’ Guide to Hiking” because it explains things in a way that little ones will understand.  Another plus is that it comes with a compass!  How much fun is that?

My granddaughter absolutely freaked out when she saw the compass.  No kidding!  We used the book the other day to walk around outside and see which way we were walking.  I explained how to use the compass and she loved it.  She has decided to use it if we ever get lost.  That is so sweet.

Every time you take your kids for a hike, you learn something about this beautiful world.  Children are like sponges, soaking up everything they can.  Even if you are just walking through a small trail in a park, you are teaching them.  Let’s say you are walking and you run across a snail.  Have them write down questions (or you can if they are too small) and you can look them up when you get home.  What a great educational experience!

Hiking doesn’t have to be traveling to another state and climbing up a mountain.  It can be a walk around the block.  If you are more daring and want a challenge, by all means, go to another state and do something different.  Either way, you are giving your child priceless experiences that they can’t get anyplace else.  Reading about nature is nothing close to going out and seeing it.  Smelling it.  Feeling it.  Especially doing this with the people they love.  These are long-lasting memories that will help them appreciate and take care of our world.

We all want our children to take care of the Earth we have been given.  This is certainly one way to do just that.  Giving them the experience makes them want to learn more.  Who knows, they may grow up to become the best environmental helper there ever was!

Get out there and enjoy our big, blue marble!
