Tough Times for Luke in Luke Gets Wishes
Luke Gets Wishes by Jennifer Molly
I love reading books with my granddaughter, it makes our bond even stronger. I always read the book before I share it with her. She loved the name of the book (Luke Gets Wishes) because she has an uncle named Lucas. So after reading the book on my own, I sat down with her and we began to read it. The story is very cute, and I love that the boy in it has been through some hard times. Although he has seen some tough things, he still ends up a happy, sweet boy in the end. I hope I didn’t ruin anything for you!
A Sweet Story
So the story starts out with Luke, the main character. He is not happy because his family doesn’t have money to buy the toys he wants or really, anything. Then, his daddy has to move away for a job. This poor kid goes through a lot of turmoil. As a matter of fact, they didn’t even have enough money to buy him new clothes or school supplies. So, as the story goes on, Luke stumbles into a magic little boy fairy named Wink (a fairy prince). Luke ends up doing something for Wink, and in exchange for that, the fairy gives him a magic handkerchief. Now, what child wouldn’t love to have a magical handkerchief? I’m an adult and I would love it! Needless to say, this magic helps Luke with a lot of things. He is able to make wishes for better food, and clothing that isn’t torn.
Luke ends up making some new friends by showing off the magic. As we all know, lunch at school can be boring. Well, not with a little magic! They each get to wish for a special food they want. Unfortunately, the Headmaster Mr. Bears is not very happy about this. You will have to read the book for yourself to see what other trouble they get into.
I like this book because it touches on real-life situations. Obviously, I don’t mean the magic. The sad events that happen in Lukes’ life will probably be familiar for some kids. We all go through our own problems in life. I enjoyed how the author used imagination to get Luke through the toughest times. It teaches children we all can use our imagination for many things. We can even use it to escape if we need to. This is a great book to read to your own children. It has many teaching points in it. I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.
